YOU BECOME YOUR FRIENDS

“Humans are extremely susceptible to the moods, emotions, and even the ways of thinking of those with whom they spend their time.”

-Robert Greene

A trend that I noticed through most of the self-development books I read was that you become who you surround yourself with; more specifically, you become the five people with whom you spend your time. This statement started making me analyze my close friends carefully.

I also translate this idea over to my social media accounts since we probably spend more time there than with actual friends. I quit following people who were not making positive impacts in my life. I didn’t follow someone just because they followed me. I only want to be scrolling through posts that bring value to my life. By doing this, I know that my feed will only be filled with positivity and knowledge when I open a social media application.

I have gotten a lot of grief from people because I don’t follow them back, but by giving me crap about it, they aren’t the right people to be following anyway. You shouldn’t be worried about if someone follows you back or not; that is a very superficial quality and one that you shouldn’t be looking to be surrounded by.

Find people who inspire you. Find people that get you out of your comfort zone and help you live life to the fullest. Figure out areas in your life that you are a bit stagnant in and search for people who are doing those activities every day.

Side Note: You don’t have to follow big-name people who have a blue checkmark next to their name. It’s probably better if they don’t have that many followers because you will feel more of an authentic connection and appreciate what that person lives for because they aren’t getting paid yet for striving to be their best!

Become more aware of who you want to be and start surrounding yourself with like-minded people. The beauty of the internet is that now you can surround yourself with some of the most brilliant minds in the world! Don’t settle for anything less.

This technology is massive for high school students and isn’t (I really wanted to use “aren’t” here) among the popular kids. Popularity dies out after high school. If you were using the internet to follow positive, influential, and knowledgeable human beings, you are so far beyond where the popular kids will be.

Some of the accounts I follow on social media: Naval Ravikant (Twitter and podcast only), Orange Book (Twitter only: @orangebook_), Tim Ferris, Gary Vaynerchuck, and Robert Kiyosaki, to name a few. I like to vary my following with self-development, health and fitness, finance, and philosophy. Interestingly enough, all topics that high school usually neglects and are themes for all the topics I will be discussing throughout this book. If you didn’t know or realize, America has a terrible school system that needs restructuring for a better future.
